Who we are?

Landing in the land of possibilities and opportunities, Caleb’s first experience was with an immigrant at the church during Sunday service. This individual shared a testimony about his struggle with medical bills. Due to his inability to read English, he accumulated bills without understanding them, resulting in overpayments. Similarly, Dr Eric said a refugee missed a job interview because he couldn’t read or use Google Maps, and a family faced financial difficulties due to mismanagement of their income. These experiences inspired Caleb and his close friend Dr. Eric to find solutions to these challenges.

On November 26, 2024, Dr. Eric Ruvuna and Mr. Caleb J. Uwagaba convened a workshop titled “Financial Literacy Education.” This event attracted forty participants, who comprehensively discussed the challenges and needs encountered during the integration process. Key areas of concern identified by the participants included limited English proficiency, computer illiteracy, financial illiteracy, declining interest in higher education, social isolation among seniors, inability to drive, delinquency among youth, and a significant prevalence of illiteracy among women.

Recognizing the value of these insights, the participants expressed a strong desire for the event organizers to continue hosting such workshops. In response to this feedback, the organizers decided to start a nonprofit organization that would serve as a hub where people could meet, discuss their issues, and find solutions to help them integrate into the American community. Thus, UNIGATE HuB (United Gate Hub Center) was established to address these identified needs and provide valuable support to the community.

At the end of the workshop, most participants recommended continuing these impactful sessions to raise awareness on crucial topics. With our help, participants gained essential insights into financial literacy, including earning, budgeting, saving, investing, credit scores, credit management, borrowing, debt management, and financial planning.

Caleb and Dr. Eric’s journey in establishing UNIGATE HuB is a testament to the power of community and the importance of addressing the unique challenges faced by immigrants and refugees. By providing the required resources and creating a supportive environment, UNIGATE HuB embodies its slogan: “Where Community Meets Opportunities.” We are building a brighter future.
